Back in early 1991 I got a call to contract a group of background singers for the movie, "Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe". Later the title was shortened to "Fried Green Tomatoes". Paul Young had sung the song, "What becomes of the broken hearted" and we sang the backgrounds to this song for the movie.
Our recording session was the usual silly fun time that we all had grown accustomed to having when we got together. So much so, that I was playing around on the 2nd verse with a line and sang 'tum, tum, tumbling down' as a repeat to one of Paul's lines. The other singers laughed, the producer liked the line and this line ended up on the song. What's funny is every time we refer to this session we refer to the session as the 'tum, tum, tumbling down' session. Fried Green Tomatoes was released in 1991 and was nominated for 2 Academy Awards.
The film went on to gross $119,418,501 worldwide, and according to Box Office Mojo, the film ranked at #11 for all films released in the Us in 1991 and at #5 for PG-13 rated films released that year.
I had worked with Paul Young on his 1990 cover of the Chi-Lites song, Oh Girl. This song was produced by Peter Wolf and we did a couple of Late Night Television Shows with Paul singing background for the song when it was released. This film gave me another chance to work together with Paul.
All in all we had a great time doing this session for this classic film 'Fried Green Tomatoes."
